The Big Bear Discovery Center is a good place to visit when coming to Big Bear. Part of the National Forest Sevice, they have a good display of a lot of the wildlife that can be found in the area, as well as maps and charts to help you when hiking or mountain bike riding. Also, if you need to get an Adventure Pass, you can get it there. They are located on the North Side of the Lake, about a mile from Stanfield Cutoff. They are close to a couple of famous trails too, including the Cougar Crest Trail.
